The Nikah Nama is the written record of your marriage contract. A clear contract prevents misunderstandings and protects both spouses.
What it usually contains
- Names of the bride, groom and wali
- The agreed Mahr (prompt and/or deferred)
- Any lawful conditions the couple agrees to
- Signatures of the spouses and two witnesses
Conditions you can include
Islam allows couples to add reasonable conditions — for example, regarding continuing education or where the couple will live — as long as they do not contradict the Shari'ah.
Alongside Ontario law
The Nikah contract is a religious document. Your legal marriage is established by the Ontario marriage licence, signed at the same ceremony. Both together give you a marriage that is complete in faith and in law.
