Registered Muslim Marriage Officiant for Nikah Ceremonies in Ontario

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! Your decision to marry is a spiritual covenant that

 is rooted in a commitment to each other. A wedding is a joyous event, and we are honored that you’ve chosen us to share the occasion!

a. Al Rayan Islamic Centre offers Nikah (marriage) services by an Imam who is a licensed marriage officer

b. Please note we do NOT perform online/virtual or telephone nikkahs

To request the Marriage service,  please follow the following steps:-

1) Obtain your Marriage certificate from any city Hall in Ontario by completing the “Marriage Application Form (act 3)” and submit it to City Hall

a. Please note that the Imam will not perform any Nikkah without a valid marriage license which must be present at the time and place of the Nikkah ceremony

2) The original marriage license and the provided return envelope need to be given to the Imam before or by the Nikkah Date at the latest

3) Ensure the Wali (male Guardaian) and Bride & Groom are present

4) Agree on elected witnesses (minimum of two required), and agree on Dowry

Nikah in Ontario — Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. A Nikah becomes a legal marriage in Ontario when it is performed by a registered marriage officiant together with a valid provincial marriage licence. Imam Gomaa Mahdi is a registered marriage officiant in the Province of Ontario, so your religious Nikah and your legal marriage are completed in a single ceremony.

You need a valid Ontario marriage licence (available from any city or town hall for about $150 and valid for 90 days) plus government-issued photo ID for both spouses and two adult witnesses. We guide you through every step.

Officiant fees vary. Contact Imam Gomaa at Al Rayan Islamic Centre for current Nikah and officiant fees. The Ontario marriage licence is separate and costs roughly $150 from your local municipality.

Yes. Imam Gomaa can perform your Nikah at Al Rayan Islamic Centre in Courtice, or travel to your home, hall or venue across Durham Region and the Greater Toronto Area.

Traditionally the groom provides the mahr (a gift to the bride) and wedding costs are arranged between the families, but couples decide together. The mahr amount is agreed between the spouses and recorded in the Nikah contract.

An online or religious-only nikkah is not by itself a legal marriage in Ontario. To be legally married you need a licensed officiant, a provincial marriage licence, and an in-person ceremony. Al Rayan performs a proper in-person Nikah that is both religiously valid and legally registered.
