A common question for Muslim couples is whether a Nikah is the same as a legal marriage in Ontario. The short answer: not by itself — unless it is performed by a registered officiant.
What a Nikah is
The Nikah is the Islamic marriage contract — the offer and acceptance, witnesses, and Mahr. It makes the marriage valid in Islam.
What makes it legal in Ontario
For the marriage to be recognized by the province, you need a marriage licence and a ceremony performed by an officiant registered under the Marriage Act, with two witnesses. The officiant then registers the marriage.
The easiest path: both together
