Getting married Islamically in Ontario is simple when you understand the steps. Here is how the religious Nikah and the legal marriage fit together.
Step 1: Get a marriage licence
Apply for an Ontario marriage licence at any municipal office (city or town hall). Both partners need two pieces of ID. The licence is valid for 90 days.
Step 2: Choose a registered officiant
To be legally married, your ceremony must be performed by an officiant registered under Ontario's Marriage Act. Imam Gomaa Mahdi is a registered marriage officiant in the Province of Ontario, so he can perform both your Nikah and the legal ceremony.
Step 3: The Nikah
The Nikah includes the offer and acceptance (ijab and qabul), agreement on the Mahr, two witnesses, a khutbah and du'a. Signing the Ontario licence takes place at the same gathering.
Step 4: Registration
Your officiant submits the signed licence to ServiceOntario, and you can later order a marriage certificate as proof.
