The Mahr is a mandatory gift from the groom to the bride and a right that belongs entirely to her.
What it means
Mahr is a symbol of commitment and responsibility. It can be money, gold, or something of value — even teaching the bride a portion of the Qur'an, as occurred at the time of the Prophet (peace be upon him).
How much?
There is no fixed amount. The Sunnah encourages moderation — a Mahr that is meaningful but not a burden. Couples agree on an amount that suits their circumstances.
Prompt and deferred
Mahr can be prompt (paid at the Nikah) or deferred (paid later, or in the event of divorce or death). Many couples choose a combination and record it in the marriage contract.
