In his final year the Prophet ﷺ said: “If I live to next year, I will fast the ninth as well,” intending to differ from those who fasted only the tenth — but he passed away before then. (Muslim). So fast the 9th together with ʿĀshūrāʾ.
العربية: عن ابن عباس رضي الله عنهما قال: حين صام رسول الله ﷺ يوم عاشوراء وأمر بصيامه قالوا: يا رسول الله، إنه يومٌ تُعظّمه اليهود والنصارى، فقال ﷺ: «فإذا كان العامُ المقبل إن شاء الله صُمنا اليوم التاسع». (مسلم).
When you fast ʿĀshūrāʾ, fast the 9th with it — the 9th and 10th of Muḥarram.
